CASE STUDIES

Retouching | Subtle Craft, Strong Impact

Retouching sits quietly behind the scenes — but it’s often the difference between an image that’s simply good and one that stops people in their tracks. It’s not about filters or gimmicks; it’s about control, consistency, and nuance. Whether I’m working on global campaigns or fast-turnaround ecomm, the goal remains the same: to bring clarity and intention to every pixel.

Photoshop has been second nature to me for over two decades, but tools are only half the story. What really matters is knowing when to use them — and when to hold back. It’s the subtle lift of contrast to guide the eye, the removal of an unwanted reflection that shouldn’t be there, or the careful matching of colour across an entire product range so that nothing jars when viewed side by side.

Sometimes, retouching is about invisibility — composites that hold together so seamlessly you’d never know the image was built from five separate shots. Other times, it’s about exaggeration — sharpening a highlight or deepening a shadow to help something leap off the page. Whatever the approach, the work is always grounded in the brief, the brand, and the medium it’s destined for.

I’ve worked on everything from automotive campaigns and lifestyle photography to flat-lay accessories, model cut-outs and CGI composites. My experience ensures I’m as comfortable working under tight deadlines as I am crafting high-resolution assets for billboard-scale visuals.

Ultimately, retouching is about respect. Respect for the original shot. Respect for the intent of the creative. And respect for the end viewer, who might not know what’s been done — but will absolutely feel the difference when it’s done well.
